This performance of Tristan und Isolde is all the more poignant because it marked the last time that either Birgit Nilsson or Wolfgang Windgassen would sing their respective roles at Bayreuth. Nilsson and Windgassen virtually owned these parts for over a decade. Birgit Nilsson once quipped that whenever she sang Tristan with anyone else she felt as if she was committing an adulterous act. So in a way this performances marks the culmination of a collaboration that had evolved since the 50s resulting in an onstage chemistry that is quite rare. Despite the fact that both singers were in their 50s, both sing with remarkable freshness. In particular, Nilsson's top gleams like I have never heard it. Windgassen also seems quite self-assured during the marathon of singing that Wagner inflicts upon his tenor in Act III. All in all, this performance comes across as much more satisfying than the legendary DGG release from a few years earlier both from a vocal and interpretive standpoint for both of the singers. Perhaps the knowledge that this was the last time inspired them to even greater heights. Karl Böhm's approach is also a little more relaxed than his usual fast-paced approach. In the supporting roles Grace Hoffman is a very good Brangäne and Martti Talvela makes a stoic, yet sensitive Marke. The sound is very good. OPERA DEPOT.

August Everding's staging of "Tristan and Isolde" (November 18), conducted by Erich Leinsdorf, was acclaimed by both critics and public as one of the most successful productions at the Metropolitan since the new house was built and certainly the first to make full and intelligent use of the elaborate technical equipment. Everding's view of the work was not dissimilar from Peter Hall's in that he attempted to set apart night and day, love and betrayal: so just as at Covent Garden, the scenery disappeared after the taking of the love potion, during the love duet, and in the "Liebestod," and an exalted, timeless world took over from the realm of reality.

There the similarities ended for two very good reasons. Gunther Schneider-Siemssen is a very different designer front John Bury and the Metropolitan's transformation worked easily, imperceptibly where Covent Garden's, not unnaturally in an older house, had been all too obvious. Schneider-Siemssen's sets were both effective, evocative, and uncluttered. That for the first act was a "coüp de théâtre." Four giant sails bestride the huge stage. Behind the one on the right, the figures of Tristan and Kurwenal are enlarged by silhouette, while the lower part of the stage is a vast cut-out of the ship's decks. For the second act, garden and castle are merely suggested. When the love music begins, all disappears, Tristan and Isolde retire to the middle of the stage (which is gradually raised) as though they were walking into eternity. There is no light except on the upper part of the principals so that they appear suspended in endless night. Later, the duet's changing moods are reflected in imaginative back projections - Harold Schonberg suggested they might be "psychedelic swirls of libido" or "electrical charges of love." During Brangäne's warning, the lovers are suitably in darkness while a spotlight reveals Brangäne on her tower, extreme left. The final set was more conventional.

The costumes did not attempt Covent Garden's return to realism and were unremarkable. At least Jess Thomas had a more becoming wig than at Covent Garden. Everding's movement was spare and pointed. There were none of the daring strokes attempted by Hall but plenty of intelligent ideas. Brangäne was frightened by Kurwenal's gruffness. She reacted with real horror when Isolde demands the death potion. Tristan was visibly affected by Mark's monologue rather than remaining impassive in the modern manner. In Act 3 his delirium was not delivered from his couch but from a kneeling position at front of the stage. Later he leapt frenetically onto the wall and fell dramatically onto his bed; that was perhaps a little strenuous for a dying man but it worked. Some other interesting points: Mark does come onto the ship at the end of Act 1; Leinsdorf had the cor anglais player on stage at the beginning of Act 3; Tristan crawls dying towards Isolde.

Leinsdorf's musical direction - a triumphant return to the house after a long absence - is not as overtly emotional or dynamic as Solti's, but was more lyrical and cogent. His speeds were a good deal faster, particularly in Act I and in Mark's monologue, yet the splendour and warmth of the interpretation was never in doubt. Leinsdorf seems happier in the opera house than in the recording studio, and obviously prefers a large canvas such as Wagner offers him. Those who have found him a cerebral conductor would have been surprised and delighted by this glowing performance. He drew playing from the Metropolitan's orchestra of the utmost clarity and breadth, a far cry from the sounds heard from that pit on an ordinary night. He made a few, traditional cuts.

Birgit Nilsson's Isolde was as thrillingly sung as ever. If possible, it was still more subtly pointed than heretofore, particularly in the narration. In a production which she had rehearsed from the beginning (in contrast with her appearances at Covent Garden) she was more involved in the role than ever, and her appeal to the dead Tristan in Act 3 was moving beyond words. Thomas's Tristan was a little less remarkable than in London, if only because the house is too big for his vocal resources (that is more a criticism of the new house than of the singer). Again, he rose splendidly to the superhuman demands of the third act.

'Siegfried" high point in Met stature

The Metropolitan Opera's new production of Richard Wagner's "Ring" Cycle continued in triumph this week with the unveiling of drama three, "Siegfried." Thanks to a generous gift of Eastern Airlines, the physical designs and concept remain those of original conductor-director Herbert von Karajan.

Thanks even more, however, to the vitality, power, sensitivity and sheer genius of conductor Erich Leinsdorf, "Siegfried" will long remain a high point in Met musical stature. Leinsdorf's direction resulted in the most superlative performance the Met orchestra has given in several years, and one of the most intellectual and emotional satisfying events of recent music seasons.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, matched Leinsdorf's magnificent concept and execution, but the entire "Siegfried" was on a distinguished level of achievement that brought glory to the performers, the company and - most important of all - to the genius of Richard Wagner.

"Siegfried" lacks the easy lyricism and drama of "Die 'Walküre," (which Leinsdorf will direct this week); and the consuming splendor of "Die Götterdämmerung." (which does not appear until next season), but it has many rich scenes, and a conclusion of radiant beauty.

The Gunther Schneider-Siemssen neo-Bayreuth sets work effectively in act one, fitfully in the long scene in the forest and gloriously in the final scene. The huge tree that shelters Mime in the [first scene], serves well for the action, and sets an appropriate mood to match the tempestuous music.

Jess Thomas, essaying his first Met performance of the title hero, is as close to ideal as we are likely to get in the near future. In the crucial forging scene, both the voice and dramatic action need more flint, steel and muscle than Thomas can provide, but elsewhere his superb physique, manly bearing and expressive voice create the young Siegfried most imposingly.

In "Siegfried." the god Wotan assumes the guise of The Wanderer, and has many of his human moments of drama and music. Thomas Stewart is a moving, dignified and vocally intense wanderer, whose singing touches the heart of the character and the audience. It is a superb accomplishment, again wanting only a certain ringing power to make it perfect.

Stewart was particularly splendid in the soaring scene with Erda in Act III. That goddess of wisdom and fertility was more tactful than earthy, was sung most beautifully by Lili Chookasian, and the entire dialogue became one of the music drama's authentic highlights.

The two major character roles of Mime and Alberich were in the expert hands of Gerhard Stolze and Gustav Neidlinger. The former recreated his celebrated interpretation that carries the whine to the point of madness most effectively. One is genuinely relieved when Siegfried finally dispatches Mime with one thrust of his sword.

Neidlinger, making his debut, sang with requisite sonority and acted with stilted gestures. Thanks to a voice of great expressiveness and power, the debut marks Neidlinger as a major addition during this crucial year based as it is largely in the regime of the past, with only glints of hope for the future.

Hans Sotin sang Fafner, the giant sleeping in the form of a dragon. The stage business for the battle between Siegfried and Fafner made the dragon into more of a primordial ooze, but we found it most exciting. Sotin's voice was miked (probably) or artificially augmented in some manner, most effectively.

The Forest Bird was sung with more drama than usual by Judith Blegen and the Brünnhilde was Birgit Nilsson. We link them not only to point up that, contrary to the audience response, Miss Nilsson's is scarcely the major role of "Siegfried," but also to note that the great lady was not in best voice. At less than best, however, Birgit Nilsson is an authentic Wagnerian, and she added a final note of glory to the Met's welcome achievement.

Kubelik Gives Wagner Poetic Coloration; Miss Nilsson Thrills in Immolation Scene

About a half dozen years after it started, the Metropolitan
Opera has finally brought its new "Ring" cycle to a close. Last night "Gotterdammerung" was staged, and it followed, more or less, the lines of the previous three operas of the Wagner cycle. It was based on Herbert von Karajan's version, with sets and projections by Gunther Schneider-Siemssen, staged by Wolfgang Weber, and with costumes by George Wakhevitch.

And Birgit Nilsson sang Brunnhilde.

The great soprano had injured herself earlier in the week during a rehearsal, falling and dislocating a shoulder. There was much speculation, of course, whether she could make it by Friday. She did, her right arm in a sling, covered by a cape. Nilsson the Indestructible sang magnificently. More of that anon.

The new production is, loosely, neo-Bayreuth. That means a prevailingly dark stage, a tilted turntable, and addles of symbolism. In this "Gotterdammerung," which anyway is the most "realistic" of the "Ring" operas, there was a more naturalistic approach than in the previous ones. There was no turntable in the hall of the Gibichungs to be accurate, elements of the turntable were on the side. The hall seemed carved from a cavern, lacking only stalactites.

Outside the hall it was all Stonehenge. Costumes were curious and may have left some members of the audience in a state of culture shock. For the final scene, for instance, Gunther's torchbearers were dressed in something out of Isis and Osiris, a long way from heroic hunting and fighting society of Wagner's world. On the stage, dominating the hall of the Gibichungs, was something
that looked vaguely bipedalian-a huge, bifurcated rocklike formation. More symbolism? Maybe. Or maybe not.

Rolf Libermann a vraiment réuni pour Elektra une de ces distributions de festival, rivalisant avec celles des plus beaux disques, qu'il annonçait en arrivant à Paris.La présence de Nilsson surtout restera inoubliable : le visage blanc dans la robe brune en guenilles, les traits burinés par quelque Rodin, le regard fixe des statues antiques, un hiératisme des attitudes secoué par des soubresauts intérieurs, par-dessus tout cette voix qui domine, survole, éclipse toutes les autres, et même l'orchestre, fascinante comme la lumière d'un soleil mythique, avec la plénitude invincible d'un arc tendu, à elle seule elle crée l'immensité tragique du drame.Réduite à l'état de bête par l'esclavage et la haine, Electre n'est plus que la prêtresse de sa faim charnelle de la vengeance, de ce bain de sang réparateur qu'elle a voulu, préparé, engendré, au long de ces années de garde rituelle, sous les murs de Mycènes, pour racheter le meurtre de son père qui a détruit en elle tout autre avenir. En Nilsson vit, avec une incomparable noblesse, l'" hellénisme démoniaque et extatique ", ressort profond de l'œuvre de Hofmannstahl et Strauss, selon le compositeur lui-même.Elle fait pâlir les autres acteurs en raison sans doute de l'orientation donnée au drame par Karl Böhm, qui interprète l'œuvre de Strauss d'une manière merveilleusement lisible, sans jamais couvrir les voix, avec un orchestre de l'Opéra ductile, transparent, superbe. L'âge, peut-être, l'a amené à cette vision lumineuse, presque sereine (jusqu'à l'épouvantable scène finale, portée à son plus haut niveau) de cette partition, qui paraissait jadis brutale, faite de coups de poing en pleine figure, constamment paroxystique, d'une intensité et d'une sauvagerie insoutenables.Jacques Lonchampt

Hunter and Nilsson in Met 'Walküre'

Kirsten Flagstad and Helen Traubel sang together in only three Metropolitan Opera "Die Walküres," in 1939 and '40, with Miss Flagstad always the Brünnhilde. On Saturday, night at the Met a subscription audience had the first opportunity of hearing a marvelous reverse combination for our time: Birgit Nilsson as Sieglinde and Rita Hunter as Brünnhilde. Justification for the comparison comes from the Traubel-like warmth and vibrato of Miss Hunter's instrument contrasted with the Flagstad-like preeminence and uniqueness of Miss Nilsson in the Wagnerian heavens.

When the British soprano first sang the "Walküre" Brünnhilde at the Met in 1972, her musicality was first rate, but the sound seemed that of an Italian lyric soprano. Her voice and style have expanded, her support has grown and though her volume might still be greater, her young radiant Brünnhilde sustained the notes of the "Death-Announcement Scene" as surely as she flamed with the passion of Act III. Miss Nilsson, in her second Met Sieglinde, let her voice out with matchless results. Never anything but feminine and lyrical and phrasing with genius, she applied all of the power and excitement at her command.

It's dangerous to predict history, but future opera lovers will no doubt hear to their envy of Saturday night's vocal confrontation between Hunter and Nilsson: the heroic naming of Siegfried followed by a stupefying "O Hehrstes Wunder." Here was gold in a world of dross. Sadly, Miss Hunter is only scheduled to sing the "Walküre" Brünnhilde in this "Ring." In England she recorded "Siegfried," and has often sung and, even last year, she sang some moving Met "Götterdämmerungs." One would think that when Miss Nilsson is not singing these roles, Miss Hunter would be.

The performance also saw the first Met Siegmund of Koibjoern Hoiseth, who replaced a sick Jon Vickers. The Swedish tenor displayed a roughish but fresh voice, not secure in the lower register. On top, however, he sang clearly and though there was some effort, he was satisfactory. Evaluation of Hoeiseth must take into consideration that for fifteen years New Yorkers have been spoiled by Vickers' always exceptional Siegmund. If one remembers what those before Vickers and after Melchior did with the part, the young tenor's straightforward, fresh singing can be appreciated. John Macurdy made a particularly sonorous Hunding; his voice seems to be deepening and growing while still keeping its basic attractive quality. Donald McIntyre and Mignon Dunn were the familiar Wotan and Fricka, and Sixten Ehrling the uninspired and maddening conductor.

Un témoignage célèbre de l'époque, rapporté par le journaliste Staffan Dopping, évoque les coulisses de ce concert. L'anecdote sur le trajet vers l'hôtel après la répétition ou le concert montre une Birgit Nilsson très accessible, loin de l'image de "diva froide" que certains critiques internationaux lui collaient parfois. Ce concert s'inscrivait dans un répertoire type qu'elle a consolidé et qui a été publié plus tard sur l'album GRONA LUND & LISEBERG - I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT (Bluebell of Sweden, 1979). Ce disque compile ses succès dans ces parcs de loisirs. En 1976, elle y interprétait des mélodies nordiques (Svarta rosor (Sibelius), Flickan under nymanen, Jeg elsker dig (Grieg), des airs d'opérette et de comédie musicale : I could have danced all night (My Fair Lady), Wien, Du Stadt meiner Träume, des grands airs d'opéra, tels que O mio babbino caro (Gianni Schicchi) ou Vissi d'arte (Tosca)
